I am a certified Human Design guide, and if you’ve followed me for a while, you already know how much I love this system.
I’ve seen what can happen during a Human Design reading when someone begins to understand herself in a completely different way. Things she may have judged about herself suddenly make sense. Patterns become easier to recognize. And sometimes, there’s a wonderful moment of, Ohhhh. So that’s why I do that.
If you’ve read some of my posts about Human Design, maybe something has started to stir in you, too.
A recognition, perhaps. A quiet sense that some of the disconnection you’ve been feeling may not mean there’s something wrong with you. Maybe you’ve simply spent years trying to live, make decisions, work, or relate to other people in ways that don’t come naturally to you.
And maybe there’s another way to understand yourself—one that’s more specific, useful, and compassionate than simply trying harder to change.
But alongside that curiosity, you may also have some hesitation.
What actually happens during a Human Design reading? Will I understand it? Is it going to feel too abstract or “woo-woo” to be useful? What if I leave more confused than when I arrived?
Those are fair questions.
So, let’s talk about exactly what you can expect.
What a Human Design reading is—and isn’t
Let’s start with what it isn’t.
It isn’t a psychic reading. I’m not going to predict your future, tell you what to do with your life, or hand you a personality type and send you on your way.
And you definitely don’t need to know anything about Human Design before we begin.
What it is is a personal conversation about how you are naturally designed to move through life.
Using your birth date, exact birth time, and birthplace, a unique BodyGraph chart is generated. Your chart includes your energy type, strategy, inner authority, defined and open centers, profile, gates, channels, and other layers of your design.
That may sound like a lot—and it is!
But my job isn’t to overwhelm you with Human Design terminology. My job is to help you understand what the most important pieces mean in your actual life.
We’re not simply reading a chart.
We’re talking about you.
What happens during a Human Design reading?
We begin with the foundation of your design: your energy type and strategy.
Your type helps explain how your energy naturally operates and how you’re designed to interact with the world around you.
This can be incredibly validating.
You may have wondered why you can work for hours on something you love but feel completely depleted doing something you think you should enjoy.
Perhaps you need more rest than the people around you. Or you’ve spent years initiating and pushing things forward when your design works better when you wait for something to respond to.
Your energy might even come in bursts rather than in a nice, predictable straight line.
Human Design gives us another lens through which to look at those experiences.
Instead of immediately asking, “What’s wrong with me?” we get to become curious and ask, “Is this simply how I’m designed?”
That can be a powerful shift.

Next, we look at how you’re designed to make decisions
From there, we move into your inner authority—your personal decision-making compass.
This is one of my favorite parts of Human Design because it’s so practical.
Most of us were taught to make decisions by thinking harder.
Make the pros-and-cons list. Gather more information. Ask everyone what they think. Analyze it one more time just to be sure.
Human Design suggests that your mind may not actually be your most reliable decision-making tool.
Depending on your authority, you may be designed to wait for emotional clarity, trust an immediate gut response, listen to an instinctive knowing, or use another internal process.
During your reading, we talk about what your authority is and, more importantly, what it might look and feel like in everyday life.
Because knowing you have Emotional Authority, for example, isn’t nearly as useful as recognizing:
Oh. Maybe I don’t need to answer that question today.
That’s where Human Design begins to move from interesting information into something you can actually use.
You can also read: How Human Design Helps You Understand Yourself
Then we explore where you’re consistent—and where you may be influenced by others
We’ll also spend time looking at your defined and open centers.
Your defined centers show areas where your energy tends to be more consistent. Your open or undefined centers show places where you’re more receptive to—and may amplify—the energy around you.
This is where some fascinating patterns can begin to emerge.
You may recognize why you:
- Feel pressure to prove yourself.
- Say yes when you really want to say no.
- Take on someone else’s stress or urgency.
- Try to have all the answers.
- Hold onto relationships, commitments, or situations longer than you really want to.
- Feel completely different depending on who you’re around.
These aren’t excuses for our behavior. They’re opportunities for awareness.
And awareness gives us choices.
The chart is about you—not Human Design terminology
Throughout the reading, we’re not just talking about your chart in the abstract.
We’re talking about your life.
Where do you feel stuck?
Where have you been pushing?
What patterns keep repeating?
Where does life feel easy and natural?
Where are you constantly second-guessing yourself?
What parts of yourself have you spent years trying to change because you assumed they were flaws?
Your chart gives us a framework for exploring those questions.
I like to think of the chart as the map.
Your life is the territory we’re actually exploring.
Who might benefit from a Human Design reading?
You certainly don’t need to be struggling to have a Human Design reading. Curiosity is enough.
But I think Human Design can be particularly interesting during midlife because this is often when we begin questioning some of the identities we’ve carried for years.
You may especially enjoy a reading if you find yourself thinking:
- I don’t really know what I want anymore.
- I’ve spent so much time taking care of everyone else that I’ve lost touch with myself.
- My life is good, so why do I still feel like something is missing?
- I’m ready for something new, but I have no idea what that is.
- I’m tired of second-guessing myself.
- Or even:
- Who am I now?
Human Design isn’t going to answer every one of those questions for you.
But it can give you a fascinating new place from which to explore them.
What you may leave with
One of the things I hope you’ll feel by the end of your session is seen.
Not in a vague, affirming way, but specifically seen.
Something that has been true about you for a long time—something you may have half-known but never had language for—may finally make more sense.
You’ll leave with a clearer understanding of how your energy naturally works and how you are designed to make decisions.
Some of the patterns you’ve developed over the years may also begin to look different—not necessarily as flaws that need fixing, but as patterns you can notice, question, and choose differently when they aren’t serving you.
And perhaps most importantly, you may leave with a little more permission.
Permission to:
- stop trying so hard to become the version of yourself you think you should be.
- trust some of the things you’ve always known about yourself.
- experiment with doing things differently.
That’s what I believe a Human Design reading is really for.
Not to tell you who to be, but to help you recognize who you already are.
You don’t need to have it figured out before you book
This is the thing I most want you to hear.
You don’t need to arrive with a clear question, a specific problem, or any idea what you’re looking for.
You don’t need to be at a crossroads, understand Human Design, or even have to be completely convinced that Human Design is going to change your life.
Just bring a little curiosity.
A willingness to look at yourself through a different lens.
And perhaps a desire to stop searching for everything that’s supposedly wrong with you and start becoming curious about what’s already right.
We’ll start there.
Ready to explore your design?
Now that you know what happens during a Human Design reading, maybe you’re wondering what your chart has to say.
My Human Design Reading Session is a one-to-one conversation built entirely around your chart and your life. There’s no group format, no generic framework, and no homework you need to do beforehand.
Just you, your design, your questions, and a guided conversation to help you better understand the person you’ve been all along.
You don’t need to become someone new. You may simply need to understand yourself differently.
