A friend of mine recently sent me an email from the IT person at the college she works at. She was asking him to recommend some positive daily news sources.
She thought these would make a good post, and I agree.
We need to know what is going on in the world and see what is going on outside of our own life. We should form our own opinions and have something to add to a conversation. However, the problem with news is that it can lower our energy and vibrations and is not always a good representation of reality. We have to be careful and aware of the fake news being spread.
That’s why I like her spin on finding positive daily news sources.
The IT person’s name is John, and here are some of his suggestions for positive daily news sources. I looked up each of these and threw in some of my own commentaries.
Positive Daily News Sources
(click on the headings for links.)
GNN – Good News Network
General News – You choose what you want to read about, and it is all good, positive news. For example, you can read something inspiring about the bus driver who saved money from every one of his paychecks to buy Christmas presents for the students on his bus route. Or, on the business side, you can read about how to make brave career choices and relaunch your identity outside the corporate rat race. They also have a “Good Gifts” page for products that support charities and a section in Spanish. I like the look of it, it is very clean and makes you feel good!
Nautilus
Science articles – If you enjoy keeping up with science, this is the page for you. You can choose from 38 different science topics or follow along with their weekly issues. I tested out a couple of articles, and I found them very interesting, but not quick reads. They are based on science and reference a lot of brilliant people! I do love knowing this exists in case I need to do some research.
NPR – National Public Radio
Latest headlines and unique NPR stories – John said about NPR, “I spent 8 years in public broadcasting and can attest first-hand to public media’s dedication to correct and fair reporting.” There is a little bit of everything here. Arts, Music, Pop Culture, National, World, Politics, Business, Technology, Health, and Race & Culture news. You can sign up to get news directly to your email every day.
Vulture
Vulture is strictly about the entertainment industry, but the New York magazine website of which “vulture” is a part has a little bit of everything. Politics, current events, food, shopping, and lifestyle. The New York Magazine is a general interest bi-weekly magazine that has a particular emphasis on New York City. This does cost $5.00 a month to subscribe, with a 30-day free trial.
The Verge
This is all about the tech industry, and the website does a good job of looking the part. I looked around at a few articles, and I could understand them. This isn’t my niche, but you should check it out if you are interested in gaming or the latest new technology.
BuzzFeed News
News stuff – “keeps me in touch with the 20-something generation,” says John. BuzzFeed News boasts that it reports breaking news. They have 163 million monthly readers. My first impression is that they don’t do a lot of heavy reporting; it is mostly headlines. However, 163 million people think otherwise!
BBC & Aljazeera
This is what John says about these. “International (and some US) News. I go to these sites when investigating an issue. I never browse these. They can be depressing. But I’m looking into an international or world-reaching matter; I check both of these sites for an outside perspective on the issue. It can be enlightening.”
I researched the next two on my own. These are a little less serious and are specifically designed to keep you in the loop of what is going on in the world.
Need2Know
This is a free daily email with stories you need to know. It throws in a little humor to make you smile before you begin your crazy day. They give short little snippets of current news, and then you can click on a link if you want to know more.
TheSkimm
This is the one that I currently receive in my email every day. I like it because it is similar to Need2Know in that it gives a condensed version of what is going on in the world with a dose of humor. I learn enough to let me be in a conversation about current events. They will also go more in-depth about certain topics they think deserve more attention. For example, in November, they did a special section of the views of opposing candidates.
I personally have stopped watching too much news on TV. It is hard to get straight news without an opinion one way or another. Plus, there is so much negative and violent news on TV that I choose to turn it off. I don’t want that negativity to be the last thing I hear or see before I go to bed. I would rather choose to find positive news. That is why a daily morning email with the highlights of what is going on is perfect for me.
With these suggestions, you can choose what and how you want to stay up to date with what is going on globally. There is something here for everyone.
Thanks, John!
