Have you ever just needed to get away? Find some alone time to sort out your thoughts? Or, have a little space to work on a hobby?
Wouldn’t it be nice to create a sacred space at home where you can go to be you and do what you want?
I just got back from an enjoyable weekend up north. Some friends host a charity golf tournament every year for Melanoma and cancer patients in their area. We have been going for 13 years. Now that the kids are older, they bring golf teams of their own, and this year we had 17 of us in a house we rented. It is a weekend we look forward to every year—so much fun to visit with friends and to have the kids together.
The only problem is I did not have space for myself. It was a little too hectic and crowded to find an hour of alone time in the morning, and we were too busy having fun for the rest of the day. It’s a weekend I treasure every year, but it is always nice to get home to my sacred space for an introvert.
What is a sacred space?
According to Encyclopedia.com, “A sacred place is, first of all, a defined place, a space distinguished from other spaces.” It has a religious connotation, but sacred also means “not to be violated, criticized, or tampered with.” My definition of a sacred space is a little piece of your home you can claim as your own, make beautiful and use for your own personal reasons.
Now that our children do not live at home anymore, I have many more options for my sacred space. Currently, my office is where I keep all of my motivating and inspirational quotes and special treasures.
But my office is where I work. I want to create a sacred space where I can tune out for a bit and not get distracted by my emails, social media, or unfinished projects.
There are a few options. I want to use my space for my morning routine of affirmations, silence, writing, reading, and visualizing.
Where can I create my sacred space?
Anywhere you can get some privacy. Depending on what you want to do, you will have to decide how much space you need. Do you need room for doing crafts or just a place to sit?
Get creative!
A corner of a room, a bench seat, an extra bedroom, a special chair, outside, on the porch, etc.
A place where you can reset and recharge. Where you are surrounded by things you love and items that put out good, positive energy. A place where you sit down and go “ahh.”
My space has to have good sunlight: a window or a view.
Convert a shed or garage space.
When I am at my cabin, my favorite place is on the deck facing the lake. It is so quiet and peaceful.
Make sure your family knows that this is your sacred space and won’t disturb you.
How can you use your sacred space?
A place to pause, relax, unplug, and reflect.
You can use it for prayer, meditation, private reflection, or your own personal timeout.
Give yourself time and space to indulge in a hobby.
Work on an important personal goal.
A place to think, ponder, plan, dream, and create.
Practice gratitude for everything in your life.
Connect with the Universe or your angels.
Journal or visualize while giving yourself some calm before your busy day or relaxation before you fall asleep.

What should you have in your space?
Your journal, of course! Even if you don’t want to take time to write, sometimes great ideas pop into your head when you are alone with your thoughts. Have something close by to write them down to act on later.
Find meaningful items already in your house before you buy anything new. Go on a little treasure hunt for items that bring you good energy.
Look for photos, mementos, candles, books, or anything that elicits a sacred feeling to you. Maybe you have a special heirloom from a deceased loved one.
Other items for your personal space
- A pillow to sit on, lean against, or hug
- Symbol of your religion or spiritual practice
- Oracle cards
- Candle
- Essential oil diffuser
- Rocks or seashells for an earth/grounded element
- Plant or flower for increased oxygen
If you don’t have space, you can claim for yourself permanently, create a portable box or bag. Put your special items inside and bring them to wherever works at the time.
Suppose you can pay attention to the color of the room. Neutral tones are calming, earth tones warming and grounding, and cool tones like blues, greens, and lavender restful.
Wherever your personal space is or however you decorate, it has to be special enough to get you there. It has to feel good and call you when you need to recharge.
If you feel the need, you can also clear your space of negative energy. Christie Inge wrote this in her article on sacred space, “You can do this in a number of ways, like burning palo santo, using reiki or crystals, sound like clapping, loud music or singing bowls, or even a simple prayer or statement will do. This clearing will remove any “leftover” energy in the space and will support your ability to be present with whatever you are doing.”
When should you use your space?
Whenever you feel overwhelmed with your life.
If you have been around people all day and need a break.
When you want to take a break from the constant chatter in the world.
Make it a part of your morning and evening routine.
To leave your stress behind.
When you want to be creative.
Creating a sacred space is a gift to yourself. After you use it, you will be a happier and kinder person.
“Your sacred space is where you can find yourself over and over again.” Joseph Campbell
This morning I got up early and went to my sacred space to write, visualize, be silent, and read. My day started more calmly, and I was recharged and reset for another day.
