Meditation can feel daunting and impossible. Trying to calm your mind and stop all of the thoughts about all that needs to be done or set aside all of the feelings about everything happening in your life is a big ask. But if you want to let go of that chaos and find some peace, meditating can help. And I have 3 tips to help you focus when you give meditating a try.
Even though I have been meditating for years, I still have trouble staying still for too long and finding the focus I need to get to that place of inner awareness.
After all, we meditate to rest the mind and attain a state of consciousness that is totally different from the normal waking state. It’s a time to connect with your higher spirit and listen to what it may be telling you.
If we don’t allow ourselves to get there, we may not be getting the full benefit.
Deepak Chopra often puts out meditation experiences. The most recent one is “Getting Unstuck: Creating a Limitless Life.” Before each meditation, he will give guidance or tips on how to get unstuck. One of the days, he talked about awareness and focus when meditating, and the tips he gave changed how I meditated.
I’ve added a PDF to the Marvelous Resource Libray – Meditation Tips – You will find it under Manifestation.
At first glance, they may seem pretty basic, but they are effective when you are in the process of calming your mind.
Tips on How to Focus When Meditating
Pay Attention
Once you have created a space for your quiet time and gotten into your position, you always start with your breath. Focusing on each breath and appreciating each one.
Think about how you feel right now, what does the current moment feel like. Notice if your thought is on something else. Don’t react to it; pay attention, notice it and then release it. Pretend you are on a mini vacation from any thought other than your breath or a mantra. Each time one comes in…
notice it and release it.
Focus
Stay appointed to one thing. During meditation, that might be your breath, a mantra, silence, or whatever keeps you on task.
This is where I lose it and cut off my meditations early. But the key is to be interested and engaged with what you are focusing on. In a sense, you lose yourself in that one thought, and everything else drifts away.
Sometimes when I am painting or walking in nature, this can happen to me. When you are doing something that you love, you can focus on only that, and time can slip away. That is the feeling you are trying to create during meditation.
Witness
Take yourself out of your body and witness what you are doing. Let the moment unfold as you watch, wait and bear witness. Watch the stillness of your body and be present at the moment without tension.
Bring yourself back into your body and listen for and witness what your higher spirit is bringing for you. It may be a feeling, a message, or an inspiration.
It’s that feeling and awareness that will bring you back to doing meditation often. So, give yourself enough time to get there.
These skills will develop naturally the more you practice meditation.
As a reminder, this is why you want to focus when meditating:
- Reduce Stress
- Control anxiety
- Be more self-aware
- Lengthen attention span
- Improve sleep
- Control pain
- Promote emotional health
- Connect to your energy source
I hope these 3 tips help you focus when meditating. Once you hit the sweet spot, you will want to continue to do it. Stop looking at it as hard. Paying attention and releasing unwanted thoughts, focusing on one thing, and witnessing the stillness will bring more joy to your practice.
