Do you ever wake up in the morning and feel a little defeated? Like you are working so hard to achieve something and nothing is happening? Do you wonder if you should just give up and move on to something else? When that happens to me, I let myself wallow in pity for awhile and then I listen to cues from the Universe and seek some motivation. Recently, that came from a book that taught me 6 roles I play when I live with purpose.
The book is called, “The Motivation Manifesto”, by Brendon Burchard. From the moment I started reading, I was being called to pick myself back up and keep fighting for my dreams. There is so much goodness in this book about finding your personal freedom and giving yourself permission to be your unique, powerful and authentic self. In fact, I’m not even done with it yet, but when I got to the chapter called, We Shall Meet Life With Full Presence and Power, I was called to sit down and write about it.
Burchard says that we must live each moment with purpose. Each moment is all we have. We can’t detach ourselves from our life and just let it flitter on by.
If there is a goal or dream you are trying to achieve, and it is what truly makes you happy and gives you purpose, you need to allow these 6 roles into your life.
Observer
The observer is the part of you that is self-aware. Picture yourself hovering over your body and watching you play out your life. You are vitally aware of what is happening at all times. It can sense when you are doing something that is out of alignment or something authentic. It allows you to take a pause before you get angry, upset, or say something you might regret.
The observer is a deep connection with yourself and to be able to play this role is vital to living a life with purpose.
As I read this section, I took notice of how I was giving up. I noticed that what I probably needed was a break and a chance to regroup and rethink my vision.
Director
The director is the conscious and internal creator of your life. When you are a director, you know what feeling, actions and goals are of each scene of your life. You have set and clarified your intentions and you direct the characters, including yourself.
If you had a big meeting tomorrow, how do you want it to play out? What is your role, how do the others react to you, what will you look and sound like? What surprises might come up and what is the end result? As the director, you can visualize and play the part.
If you are not directing your life, you are lacking a plan. You just flitter in and out of scenes and the wrong people keep showing up.
The director is conscious of the reality you are creating.
I was letting my life direct me. I need to be more clear on what I want to create.
Guardian
The guardian protects you from unwanted contaminants, negative information, people and habits.
Your guardian needs to be strong. There is so much useless information being consumed through the media, both news and social. It comes from the music you listen to and the TV shows and movies you watch. It comes from your family and friends who complain to you consistently.
“Everything we consume becomes a part of us.”
You need to be conscious of the information entering your mind. Seek sources that provide positive, empowering information that moves your life forward.
Let the guardian within you protect a healthy and vital mind.
Also, don’t forget about guarding the toxic food you bring into your body and the toxic people you let into your life. Be a guardian of your whole life.
I was letting comparisons to others affect my opinion of what was considered success.
Warrior
“Be bold, fierce and unrelenting in chasing your dream.”
Ask yourself, “What do I want and how hard am I prepared to fight for it?”
Then prepare for your battle.
What skills, tools and people do you need to live your purpose? What must you sacrifice to reach your highest goal?
Know that it might be hard and you must be prepared to move past obstacles in your way.
You must fight for your dreams. Where are you letting excuses get in the way? Be aware of your limiting beliefs, fears and perfectionism and bulldoze right through them.
Do not apologize for your boldness and commitment in your character to fight for what you want.
I am picking myself up and finding new ways to achieve my goals. I can’t give up now.
Lover
Take the time and attention necessary to care for those you love. You must not forget who you are fighting for and who will benefit when you achieve your goals. Communicate with your presence, attention, and more purposeful tending to their needs. Relationships and connection are vital to your life.
Take a vital interest in others so that you can understand them and give them respect and empathy.
But always remember that in order to give love to others we must love ourselves first. Knowing how to love yourself opens up so much space to give more love to others.
My relationships with the people I love is more important than my goals. The lover in me lets me take a step back and put a new light on why I want to live with purpose. It makes me a happier person which then radiates happiness and love onto them.
Leader
By taking on all of these roles, we become better people. And when others see you reaching your goals and living your best life, you become a role model and inspiration for others to do the same.
The world needs leaders who have love and compassion for everyone. Leaders who fight for a goal and uplift others along the way.
“We must begin again the great work of uplifting humankind.”
Each of these roles are available to you at any moment. Don’t be detached from your life.
Observe your actions and feelings, direct your life, guard against toxicity, be a warrior and fight for what you want, love yourself and others and be a leader who inspires others to do the same!
You will not master these roles simultaneously, but that does not mean you should neglect them.
“The moments of our lives must not go unnoticed and unlived.”
This book was just the motivation I needed to pick myself back up and remember to live with purpose.
