It’s Marvel’s birthday today! Marvel is my mom, the inspiration behind Living Marvelously. She would have been 84 years old today. I think we all should celebrate, so I have come up with 25 celebration ideas for your birthday.
Birthdays are a celebration of life. We are lucky every time another one comes around. It doesn’t matter what number you are celebrating, it’s your day to have some fun, do what you want, and treat yourselves. Make your birthday a day to celebrate yourself!
I know there are a lot of people who don’t like to celebrate birthdays, but I think that is silly. So what if you are 30, 40, 50, 60, or more. Everyone is aging at the same rate. That is just the way life works. If you make it that long, celebrate for someone who didn’t. And, if you don’t like how you feel at a certain age, make a decision to work on that!

Why you should embrace getting older
We grow wiser as we get older
Think of all of the things you have experienced since your 20’s and everything you have learned from those experiences. You accumulate wisdom as you age.
According to Psychology Today, older decision makers make significantly better choices by using their pre-frontal cortex, where more rational, deliberative thinking is controlled.
If you take care of yourself and keep your mind active, think how smart you will be in your 80’s!
As we get older, we figure out what we love to do
According to the Kauffman Foundation, three-quarters of all new entrepreneurs in 2014 were between the ages of 35 and 64, with most being 45 or older.
Here are a few examples:
- Charles Ranlett Flint launched IBM at 61
- Laura Ingalls Wilder was 65 when “Little House in the Big Woods” came out.
- Louise Hay was 58 when she started the Hay House publishing company. She passed away in 2017 at the age of 90.
- Ray Kroc was 51 when he started the food chain, McDonalds.
- I started my blog at the age of 52. (Had to throw that in there?)
You are never too old to find your passion.
You are only as old as you feel
This is a cliché, but there is scientific proof that this is true.
According to the Washington Post, as people get older, they consistently report feeling younger than their biological age.
Also, positive attitudes about aging are associated with a reduced risk of dementia.
According to an article on bbc.com, your subjective age (the age you feel) can better predict your health than the date on your birth certificate.
There is truth to the saying that “50 is the new 30”.
The point is, and I’ve said it before, as long as we are alive, there is more life to live!
So, back to celebrating Marvel’s birthday!
If Marvel were here today, I think her perfect day would be to drink coffee on her deck while she watched the golfers, get her hair done, pick out her favorite visor and play a round of golf with her friends, join her family at the casino and then end it with dinner at the nearby supper club.
The way to celebrate your birthday is the way you want to celebrate. If you don’t want anyone buying you gifts, tell them. If you don’t want to blow your diet with all of the special food and cake, don’t. Plan ahead and make sure your loved ones know what you want to do. That is part of being in control of your own life. (If you have seen the movie, Wine Country on Netflix, you will know what this means?)
My favorite birthdays always include my husband and kids going somewhere and just spending time together. I also love a good meal and a glass of wine. Feeling good is important for me, so a new outfit or a day at the spa would be wonderful. I do not like big parties, so my family knows not to plan one.
If you could do anything to celebrate your birthday, what would it be?

Happy Birthday, Mom! I hope you get a birdie today in heaven!
Today isn’t my birthday, but it might be yours. If it is, I hope you’re having a wonderful day–a day of authentic indulgences, joyful simplicities, contemplation, closure, and celebration. We should all commemorate our birthdays that way. Sarah Ban Breathnach
