A Novel Sisterhood is the amazing book club I have been a member of since 2001. We get together about every 6 weeks to discuss our book, but most of us read a few more selections in between. We celebrated 20 years together at Katie’s cabin this past summer!

Best of Book Club Books 2021
An Invisible Thread by Laura Schroff
The true story of an 11-year-old panhandler, a busy sales executive, and an unlikely meeting with destiny. A great story of two worlds colliding and the thread that holds them together. I loved how this woman and the boy saved each other. And the beauty of what can happen when you follow your intuition is inspiring.
The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett
This book came out in 2020, but we read it in January. It’s a 2021 Women’s Prize Finalist. The story is about identical twins from a small, southern black community where the residents are all light-skinned. One sister decides to secretly leave the other and live her life passing as a white person. Many years later, their daughter’s lives intersect and the sisters have to decide how to deal with it. This is an excellent read!
Broken Horses by Brandi Carlile
A memoir by Brandi Carlile explores her musical career, her faith, sexuality, and parenthood. If you listen to the audible version of this book, she sings songs in between chapters. Most of the book club loved this book and would highly recommend the audible version. I haven’t learned to like audible books yet, so it wasn’t for me, but I had to include it because it got rave reviews from almost everyone else.
The Girl in the Mirror by Rose Carlyle
This is also a story of twin sisters, but these twins are mirror twins. This one is a psychological thriller. When my book club gathered to discuss this book, we really wanted to rate it about a C, but this book created more discussion than we have had in years. I would highly recommend this book for a book club. You will miss things and not even know it! I totally had the ending wrong until someone told me to read it again. Crazy!
The Book of Lost Friends by Lisa Wingate
Lisa Wingate is a repeat author for us. We also read Before We Were Yours, which is very good. The Book of Lost Friends follows two timelines and is historical fiction about three young women searching for family in the post-Civil War South and a modern-day teacher trying to connect their story with her students’ lives. The history and how people connected with each other back then is incredible.
The Midnight Library by Matt Haig
Think of a modern-day What a Wonderful Life; the ultimate book of “What if?” What if you could live your life based on making one alternate decision? Where would you be? Who would you be with? What would your relationships with family and friends be like? What would be different or the same? Follow Nora as she explores her “What if” moments to see if she can determine what her best life is.
The Guncle by Steven Rowley
Patrick has lost his best friend who happened to be married to his brother and now his brother is headed to treatment for substance abuse so he can be there for his motherless children. While he’s away someone needs to care for the children: 6-year-old Grant and 9-year-old Maisie. Enter Patrick aka GUP (Gay Uncle Patrick). The book follow their adventures, fun, flubs and growing pains as a gay bachelor tries to care for his niece and nephew while also grieving the loss of their mother and his significant other. It is a beautiful book with ALL THE FEELS! While it has its heavy moments it is delightful, charming and so full of heart you will be laughing and crying throughout.
The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels by India Holton
A fun rollicking fantasy book where a group of clever but prim and proper lady thieves takes on pirates and other scoundrels’. An absolutely fun trip of a book. With such fantastic and outlandish characters who you will love and love to hate. Even if fantasy books are not your thing, I would totally recommend this. So fun!
Abby Jimenez – Author
3 separate books but have some characters appear across them so I would recommend reading in order:
All 3 books are full of fun, a little raunchy, racy sex talk, and a LOT of heart. 3 different women in 3 extraordinary situations find themselves through the pages of these 3 books. Written by local girl, Nadia Cakes owner and Food Network Cupcake Wars champion.
A fun little twist to this blog post is that my daughter Maggie now has her own book club in Milwaukee! She gave me a couple of their favorites too.
Writers and Lovers by Lily King
This is a story of a woman who at 31 is still pursuing her artist dreams and is finding ways to support herself while she writes her novel. A woman who is pursuing personal fulfillment when the world is telling her to do different sounds right up my alley! Oh, and I guess there is a which-lover-will-she-choose twist too.
The Nine Lives of Rose Napolitano by Donna Freitas
A novel about love, loss, identity, and compromise. It’s another what would happen if we took a different path story. I find these intriguing because I know that there are infinite possibilities in life and we should discover new things all of the time. This book is about a woman who thought she never wanted to be a mother and how life can surprise us.
