1. The person you meet is the right one.
  2. What happens is the only thing that can happen.
  3. Every moment when something starts is the right time.
  4. What’s over is over.

How do you feel when you read those four laws of spirituality? Does it make you relax and feel a sense of peace or does it make you anxious because you can’t control what’s happening?

These 4 laws of spirituality come from Hindu philosophy. According to History.com, Hindus believe in the doctrines of samsara (the continuous cycle of life, death, and reincarnation) and karma (the universal law of cause and effect). One of the key thoughts of Hinduism is “atman,” or the belief in the soul. This philosophy holds that living creatures have a soul, and they’re all part of the supreme soul.

To me being spiritual is having a meaningful connection with something bigger than ourselves. A higher spirit that helps co-create our lives. And if we can truly believe that, it also includes allowing the spirit to guide us and trusting that the Universe only wants what is best for us. It allows us the opportunity to release judgments, expectations, and fear.

That is why these four laws of spirituality caught my attention. I believe that to fulfill our purpose is to do what brings us the most joy. And, if we are doing that, everything else comes to us when we need it.

That doesn’t mean you get to just sit on the couch and watch TV while people and things are brought to your house. It means when you put yourself out into the world, take baby steps to reach your dreams, and share love, the Universe will meet you.

Let’s take a closer look at the four laws.

Four Laws of Spirituality

The person you meet is the right one.

You contribute something to other people’s lives and vice versa. Every time you encounter another person, you provide something to them. Either negative or positive. And every time you encounter someone you receive something. It is through your own perception what that is. And with every encounter, it is a chance to learn. Who did the Universe or Higher Spirit bring to you today? Were you able to share your gifts? Did you learn a much-needed lesson to help you move past a block in your life? Maybe you just were given the opportunity to experience more joy. Pay attention to who you encounter and be aware of what you are giving and receiving.

What happens is the only thing that can happen.

I think this law can take a major burden off of us. How much time have you spent rehashing something that has happened and beating yourself up for not doing something differently to produce a different outcome? But you know that you can’t do anything to change what has already happened. Now that it is past, it couldn’t have been otherwise. Now your job is to learn from it, grow and move on. Stop using the present to recreate the past. It is a waste of time. Find ways to be joyful now. If you feel bad about something you did, take the time now to reach out and correct it.

Every moment when something starts is the right time.

Anything new that comes into your life appears because you attract it and you are prepared to see and feel it. When a new opportunity comes up, or a new relationship or money appears, or a milestone in your life comes into play, then that was the right time for it. Sometimes, you know you want something to happen and you worry, push, judge, or simply wait, when in reality, you could be enjoying life knowing it will come when you are ready.

What’s over is over.

Keep moving forward. Many things will end in your life and there are many ways to deal with them. The easiest way is to understand that all things come to an end and because you are still here and living, there is more time for you to share your gifts and feel joy. Be grateful for and appreciate all that whatever has ended has brought you and taught you. But your purpose has not ended. Whether that ending is a job change, divorce or relationship, bankruptcy, school, death of a loved one, or health change, it is the right time for it, it is over, and you can move on from there. Your job is to live in the present. What can you do to continue to move forward?

If you can embrace these four laws of spirituality, they can take a lot of stress and burden off of you.

Start by doing small things each day to find what brings you joy, connect to your higher spirit through meditation or writing, and put yourself out into the world to let the Universe meet you with all that you desire. Loosen some of the control you believe you have and enjoy your life.
