There’s something about travel that makes us feel more alive. It’s the excitement of having something to look forward to; it’s the feeling of stepping away from your normal routines and responsibilities for a few days. Or maybe it’s simply being reminded that there is a big, beautiful world beyond the walls of your everyday life. Whatever it is for you, travel feeds the soul.

When the kids were younger, travel wasn’t as straightforward. They were busy with school, sports, and other activities, so even if my husband and I took a trip, we had to plan a lot to ensure everything ran smoothly while we were away.

Now that the kids are out of the house, midlife is the perfect time to travel. Maybe that’s why so many of us start craving adventure again in midlife. We finally have a little more freedom, a little more perspective, and a deeper appreciation for experiences over things. And when we do travel, we often realize it’s about so much more than just getting away.

Why Does Travel Feel So Good

Travel gives us something many of us are missing in everyday life: presence.

When we travel, we notice things again. The food tastes better. Conversations feel more interesting. Even small moments—like sitting at an airport with a drink before boarding a plane—feel meaningful.

Psychologists often say that anticipation increases happiness, which explains why planning a trip can feel almost as exciting as taking one.

“There’s no way I was born to just pay bills and die.”

Sometimes just knowing there’s an adventure ahead can help you get through difficult seasons of life.

Travel Gives Us Something To Look Forward To

When you can plan a trip of any kind, you can put it on the calendar and have something to anticipate. If you are having a bad day or just need a break, you remember that there is a fun getaway coming up, and it makes it easier to get through.

One of my favorite parts of traveling is actually the planning.

Researching destinations.
Finding restaurants.
Buying a few new outfits.
Imagining yourself somewhere completely different.

Planning pulls you out of autopilot and gives your mind somewhere hopeful to wander. Even dreaming about future adventures can make life feel a little lighter.

“When preparing to travel, lay out all your clothes and all your money. Then take half the clothes and twice the money.”   -Susan Heller

Travel Expands Your World

Travel reminds us how much more there is to see, learn, and experience.

It’s easy to stay inside our routines, our hometowns, or even our own thoughts. But the world is full of different perspectives, cultures, foods, landscapes, and ways of living.

Sometimes all it takes is visiting a new place to realize there are many ways to build a beautiful life.

As I shared in another post on Living Marvelously:

“It is so easy to just sit at home and hide behind the computer or the TV, but life was meant to be lived. Have some adventure, expand your world. Life is so precious, so short, so undiscovered.”

“Live your life by a compass, not a clock.” — Stephen Covey

Our next big adventure is Italy, high on the bucket list!

Why Travel Creates Strong Memories

Some of our most vivid memories happen while traveling because we are fully engaged in the experience.

We remember:

  • laughing too hard at dinner with friends
  • getting lost in a new city
  • trying foods we can’t pronounce
  • watching sunsets from places we’ve never been before
  • staying up late talking in hotel rooms or around a campfire

Travel pulls us away from distraction and back into the moment.

And honestly, some of my favorite memories aren’t even the big adventures. They’re the little things:

  • airport people-watching
  • sharing appetizers with friends
  • road trip conversations
  • finding a cozy coffee shop in a new town

Those are the moments that stay with you.

You Don’t Have to Travel Far to Feel Alive

The beautiful thing is that adventure doesn’t always require a passport.

Sometimes you can feed your soul by:

  • taking a road trip to a nearby town
  • trying food from another culture
  • reading books about places you want to visit
  • planning a dream vacation
  • exploring a park you’ve never visited
  • having dinner outdoors with friends
  • saying yes to something different than your normal routine

Travel is really about curiosity.
About openness.
About allowing yourself to experience life more fully.

Why Travel Matters

Travel isn’t just about escaping life.

Sometimes it’s about reconnecting with yourself.

It reminds us that life can still surprise us.
That there are beautiful places we haven’t seen yet.
Interesting people we haven’t met yet.
Experiences we haven’t had yet.

And maybe that’s why travel feeds the soul.

Because it reminds us that the world—and our lives—are still full of possibility.

What place feeds your soul the most? Or where are you dreaming of going someday?
