When I was younger, and my family would drive by farms, I would always look at cows and wonder what they were thinking. As we go on our adventures, they stand there every day with the same herd. Aren’t they bored? What, if anything, do they think about? We will probably never know, but what I think is cool about nature is that most animals, plants, and nature are born, grow, or are here for one purpose. To do what they are called to do. Just one of the many lessons we can learn from nature.
How does that sound to you? Can you wake up every day and do what you are meant to do without thinking about anyone or anything else? Each one of us is born with a different purpose. Your purpose can be discovered by following what brings you joy. Everything in nature does what it is called to do.
“Nature is attracted to connection. If we look at nature’s development, then we can conclude that nature’s purpose is to reach a perfect connection among all of its parts.” (Dr. Michael Laitman) As humans, we can learn from nature by properly connecting with other parts of reality, especially with our fellow humans. Be supportive and acknowledge that every person is vital to the world.
Lessons from Nature
Trees
“A tree has roots in the soil yet reaches to the sky. It tells us that to aspire, we need to be grounded and that no matter how high we go, it is from our roots that we draw sustenance.” Wangari Maathai
Have a good understanding of what is important in life. Know your core values and draw from them when you are making decisions. Like the tree that produces oxygen and cleans carbon dioxide out of the air we breathe, you have unique talents to share with others. The rest of the world needs your talents.
Another lesson I recently learned about trees was from the A Course in Miracles workshop I am doing. Robert and Holly Holden described trees like this.
“A tree is drawn upwards by the warmth and mystery of the sun and nurtured from the deep via its root system and the generosity of the earth.”
Likewise, we grow by looking to our higher spirit for the warmth and mystery of life while relying on the truth that we are grounded in love and support. Trusting and allowing every day.
Ocean
“If the ocean can calm itself, so can you. We are both saltwater mixed with air.” Nayyirah Waheed
Life is like an ocean, it ebbs and flows, and it has high and low tides. Like the ups and downs of life, we are often surprised when it changes, but that is the nature of life. Embrace the changes and learn from them to propel you forward. As long as you are alive, there are adventures to be had, and you are in control.
“You are not a drop in the ocean; you are the entire ocean in a drop.” Rumi
When I look at the ocean, I see tranquility. It mesmerizes me, and the mystery of what is beyond it and beneath it is amazing. It is similar to the Universe or Divine Intelligence. And, if you believe that you have the power of the Universe within you, just like the ocean, there are infinite possibilities for your existence.
Blooming Flowers
“If you tend to a flower, it will bloom, no matter how many weeds surround it.” Matshona Dhliwayo
“A flower does not think of competing with the flower next to it. It just blooms.” Zen Shin
Flowers are my favorite metaphor for life. There are so many varieties, and they are all beautiful in their own way. Flowers will grow from the strangest places and maintain their beauty. Like each of us needs to shine, be proud of who we are, be who we are meant to be, and let our beauty show.
Sun and Moon
“Tell me the story about how the sun loved the moon so much he died every night to let her breathe.”
“Don’t compare your life to others; there’s no comparison between sun and moon. They shine when it’s their time.”
The sun and moon have to work together to provide light to the earth. What if they got mad at each other and decided not to come up? The whole world would be affected in tragic ways. What is not working in your life because you can’t coexist with someone or have decided you are worth more than someone else?

Listen for Guidance
Walking outside, breathing fresh air, feeling the breeze on my face, and looking at the flowers and trees all around me, is my favorite way to listen for guidance from my higher spirit. It’s as if the air is whispering to me. All I have to do is set an intention or ask a question and then appreciate nature. The answer always comes. While I listen to my meditation in the morning, I stare out the window and watch the trees move with the wind. It always puts me in a trance. Look outside and see and hear the lessons from nature everywhere.
“Nature is cheaper than therapy.” M.P. Zarrella
“The energy of abundance is expressed everywhere. In abundance, every cell in your body gets everything it needs—food, air, and water. Life on earth would be inconceivable without Nature’s abundance.” – Deepak Chopra
“Man, unlike the animals, has never learned that the sole purpose of life is to enjoy it.” — Samuel Butler
Pay attention to the lessons from nature that are right outside your door. Feel the peace and calmness of knowing who you are and what you are meant to do.
