Does anyone tell the truth anymore? I’m finding it harder and harder to trust what anyone says. 2020 is messing with our heads. There is too much going on and too many people spewing different opinions on us. The quotes about telling the truth below remind us why it’s important.

Politicians, voters, government officials, scientists, doctors, social media, media, etc. Everyone is trying to make you believe their word. It’s all making me a little crazy!

People say, “do your own research,” but I don’t know which sources I can actually trust.

I’ve stopped watching the news, but I can’t bury my head in the sand. I’ve really limited my social media time, only allowing myself one deep dive a day. (Because I do love seeing pictures of people having fun!)

I want to know the actual truth. Which got me thinking, what is “truth” anyway?

According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, the definition of truth is:

  • the body of real things, events, and factsACTUALITY
  • the state of being the caseFACT

So, to know the truth, you would have to see something actually happen. Or trust the person that is telling you about it. Wouldn’t it be nice if it were that simple?

But this year has me doubting a lot.

The truth does not come out, which leaves people to make up their own conclusions, which becomes the truth for them. They then try to make others agree. Until no one knows what the real truth is. Truth has become objective.

Let’s bring telling the truth back!

4 Benefits to Telling the Truth

  1. You don’t have to remember what lies you have said to different people.

It is easier and less stressful always to tell the truth. You don’t have to worry if your lie will be found out or what lies you have to keep up with.

  1. You will also be truthful with yourself.

I like this example of what being truthful with yourself means from an article in the Huffington Post by Michael Feeley.

“Here’s what pops into my head when I think about being true to yourself — integrity, beliefs, personal values, honesty, sincerity, unwavering principles, being complete, authentic, living by what is and what is not acceptable to you, morals, ethics, right and wrong, honor, not being false, truth…just being you.”

When you are used to telling the truth, you will be true to yourself. Know what truths you abide by and what makes you happy and fulfilled.

  1. People will trust you.

When you are known as someone honest, other people will be more honest with you. You will be able to build deeper connections with your friends and family. Opportunities can arise for you as a trustworthy person.

  1. Everyone is working from the same premise.

There can still be differing opinions, but everyone is working from the same set of facts.

I want to believe in telling the truth again. So, I found a few quotes about telling the truth to remind us why it’s important.

I’m patiently waiting for this election to be over, to find a vaccine for COVID19, for systemic racism to be abolished and whatever else is causing strain between all of us to be resolved.

But, until all of those things happen, I would settle for knowing and telling the truth. I’ll keep seeking, and in the meantime, be impeccable with my own word. Want to join me?
